Three Ways To Jumpstart Your Bible Study This Fall

By Andrea Lucado

As summer is sadly coming to an end, you may be wondering what happened to your grandiose plans of getting all of those projects done around the house, taking educational trips with your kids, and reading all of those novels on your nightstand. Perhaps, reading the Bible was also on your list. And, perhaps, this also didn’t happen this summer.

It’s easy to do. When your family is out of their routine, so are you. Plus, who has time to read the Bible when there’s a pool to lounge beside?

Instead of feeling defeated by not meeting your summer Bible study goals, see this fall as a chance for a fresh start. Here are some of our tips for jumpstarting your Bible study this fall:

Simplify

Setting goals that are bigger than you can handle will only set you up for failure. Rather than setting the goal to read through all four gospels, or all of the major prophets, choose one book. Then, set a realistic time period in which to read it. (Count on missing a day here and there).

By the end of the season, you will have read through an entire book of the Bible and you’ll probably be ready for another! Greater than Gold has several studies that focus on only one book at a time. Consider starting with The Gospel of John, Exodus, or Romans.

Invite a Friend

To succeed at any goal, accountability is critical. If you skip your Bible study for a few days in a row, who will know?

This is why we’re big fans of studying the Bible in groups. A group can range in size from two people to 20, or more. It could be that you know several others like you who are wanting to jumpstart their Bible study this fall. Invite them along! Or, maybe you have a neighbor who’s expressed an interest in getting into the Word more.  Invite him or her to join you.

You are much more likely to stick with something—or to start something in the first place—if you have someone with you on the journey.

Be Consistent

Consistency is just as crucial as accountability. When we do something around the same time each day or each week, it becomes a habit. Try being consistent with when and where you study the Bible for three weeks. Don’t tell yourself you have to be consistent for three months. That’s overwhelming and may cause you to quit before you even start.

Set a time and place that you will study your Bible by yourself for a few times each week, or if you are studying with a friend, set a time and place you can easily meet each other during week. Be consistent for three weeks and see how it goes. We bet that after three weeks, you’ll want to keep going.
