When I officiate a wedding, I always make sure to invite Jesus as a guest.
The wise bride and groom will recognize that He should be the guest of honor, and they should welcome him there. I have a rule - I won’t perform a wedding unless Jesus is invited.
We read in John chapter 2 that there was a wedding in Cana, and Jesus was invited.
It is a well-known Bible story that documents Jesus’ very first miracle. The stage is set when the unthinkable happens. I once officiated a wedding where the food ran out before all the guests had eaten. I felt really bad for the hosts and for the disappointed people who remained hungry, but especially for the servers who were at a loss for what to do. At the wedding in Cana they ran out of wine. Because of the local culture and water quality issues, this was a big deal.
When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, what does this have to do with me? My hour has not yet come.” John 2:3-4 ESV
All of a sudden the problem became Jesus’ problem. His mother knew he would and could come up with a solution, which he did. His mother next gave instructions to the servants. I can imagine these poor people were stressed out and scrambling for a solution.
Anytime something in our lives gets disrupted or is turned upside down, or the unthinkable happens, we begin to scramble for a solution. Often, we look to the wrong place for the answer when we should be looking to Jesus.
The instruction Jesus’ mother gave to the servants was very simple. It is an instruction we too should follow anytime and every time we find ourselves in a stressful situation.
His mother said to the servants, “Do whatever he tells you.” John 2:5 ESV
How simple: Do whatever He tells you.
If we look more deeply into this amazing story, we see the process that took place. The servants had to participate, and although they are just details, the real story is that because they participated and followed Jesus’ instructions, a miracle resulted!
We have the Bible, the Word of God, the instructions from Jesus that will guide us to a solution for every stressful situation we might face.
What Word does He have for you and your situation? The solution may be a miracle, and it’s probably going to require your participation. Your part is to follow His instructions. Just do it.
