How Does The Bible Work?

Not long ago, I gave a friend their very first Bible.  This middle-aged adult had never been exposed to Christianity before and I was honored to make the introduction.  I was a proud presenter and they were a proud recipient. I was stunned when they asked me this question; “How does it work?”.  I’d never thought about that before.  I assumed everybody knows how to use the Bible.  But the reality is, probably most people don’t know how it works.

It works very well, if you know how to use it.

I explained that it is not a novel and that you don’t necessarily start at page one and begin reading.  Even though the creation story and the flood narrative found in Genesis make for pretty good reading, and the crossing of the Red Sea in Exodus is captivating. But, the 3056 words of detail in Exodus about how to build the tabernacle is tough to get through.  Advance to Leviticus and the law, toss in family geneology of names we can’t pronounce and the counting of people in Numbers and the text can become very boring.

The last thing I wanted my friend to do was to get bored, frustrated and lose interest.

I needed to teach them how to study the Bible, but neither of us had the time to add this to our schedules, especially sitting down together for a one on one session.
